Earn a Bike – Trips For Kids

Youth Mountain Biking Clinics and Camps held at Markham Park in Sunrise get kids outdoors and moving during out of school times and include environmental education, nutrition and cooking activities, and sports skills.

Earn a Bike with FLIPANY (we come to you)

FLIPANY has been delivering bike safety education and training to children for 3 years in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Each year FLIPANY delivers FLIPANY’s Spring Break Mountain Bike Camp at Markham Park. The camp includes bicycle safety, riding skills, and healthy lifestyles.  We also deliver the Earn a Bike program and the Spring Break Youth Mountain Biking Camp for ages 9-17 facilitating team building and character building through mountain biking.

FLIPANY delivers the weekly Earn a Bike program that uses the bike as a tool to develop leadership and teamwork skills as well as bike mechanic capabilities in youth ages 9-17. Youth who attend all eight of the sessions of the program earn a recycled bicycle of their own, along with a brand new lock and helmet to keep them and their bike safe. For many of our participants, this is the only way they can afford to get a bike.

Trips for Kids FLIPANY is a member of Trips for Kids® International ( www.tripsforkids.org) a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Marin County, California. Founded in 1988 and is now operating in over 80 locations throughout the United States, Canada and Israel.

Trips for Kids (TFK®)  International has opened the world of cycling to over 100,000 at-risk youth through guided mountain bike rides and job training/earn-a-bike programs.  All TFK chapters, modeled on the foundation of the original TFK Marin program, are managed and operated independently at the local level but share a common goal. The mission is to use bicycles as a vehicle for lessons in confidence building, achievement, health, fitness and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun.

We would not be able to do the work we do without the generous support of our Trips for Kids International Sponsors and are proud to be working in partnership with these companies. Please join us in saying thank you by patronizing their business whenever possible.

At FLIPANY’s Adventure Camp, students receive instruction on how to ride a bike safely, ride the mountain bike trails at local parks, fix and maintain their bike, and maintain the bike trails. These kids also increase their physical activity levels on the seat of a bike. Students who would not otherwise have an opportunity to ride bikes on mountain bike trails, engage in physical activity and learn about the environment, receive hands on lessons and become successful at new skills.

What kids say about the camp:

“I learned at Camp FLIPANY you can do your best and you have fun”- 11 year old participant

“I learned how to ride a bike on the trails, at first it was hard, but for me now its fun”- an 8 year old participant

The kids not only have fun but they learn a lot too! Our pre and post test data show that after the week-long camp, there was statistically significant increases in kids’ fruit and vegetable consumption (P< 0.001), bike knowledge (P< 0.01), number of food groups known (P< 0.001), and the number of hours active (P< 0.01). Moreover, there was a decrease in the number of sweet drinks consumed (P< 0.01).

Thank you to Yuri Feito, Ph.D. FLIPANY Board member and Kennesaw State University Professor and  Jessica M. Valenzuela, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Center for Psychological Studies at Nova Southeastern University for helping analyze this data!
